Grade 2 braille
ADA signs use contracted braille, called Grade 2. Whole words and common letter groups become single cells. Spelling every letter, Grade 1, is not the standard for room signs. The dots are domed, and the spacing follows Table 703.3.1: dot diameter, dot height, spacing inside the cell, and spacing from cell to cell.
Braille sits below the corresponding raised text. On more than one line, it sits below the last line. It stays at least 3/8 inch from other tactile characters and from a raised border. It does not go inside a pictogram field.
A floor plan that shows a row of dots is showing position and size, not the translation. The production-ready art you supply has to include the Grade 2 braille. Translation accuracy is yours. If the words are not already contracted, braille translation is quoted per job. Do not copy dots from a previous project and hope the room name matches.
On a compression molded face the dots are part of the acrylic. They are not beads pressed into drilled holes, so they do not work loose. The 3D preview contracts Grade 2 from the copy you type as a layout placeholder only. It is not production art. We manufacture from the production-ready art you supply, and braille translation and accuracy are your responsibility.
